Here are some excerpts from scholarship application essays to give you a snapshot of who the recipients are, how much they have accomplished, and what being a student at SUNYUlster means to them:

"Four years ago, I believed that I was 'too old' to pursue a teaching degree, but many friends, colleagues, and the school administrator where I worked urged me to advance in my career because of the experience and 'talent' I exhibit while working with children.
After attending Ulster County Community College for the past four years, I have found that I love the challenge that the courses give me - and that you are never too old to learn! I work as hard as I can to achieve the highest goal, and it gives me great satisfaction when I do so.
Not too long ago, I believed that I had missed my chance at ever becoming a teacher. But, now, I have turned that belief around and I am hoping to achieve a professional degree in teaching."

"As a non-traditional student who has overcome many challenges, I am finally in the position where I can achieve my dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. This is something that I never thought could possibly happen. But here I am, attending Ulster County Community College, and loving every minute of it. I have to give credit to the wonderful teachers and advisors at Ulster who helped me through it all."

"Having completed most of my graduation requirements by the end of my junior year in high school, I decided to attend SUNY Ulster as an Early Admission student. This year has been challenging; adjusting to being at campus, taking more difficult courses, and still being involved at high school. In addition to college and extra-curricular activities, I also have a part-time job. I have achieved these accomplishments with hard work, dedication, and with the support of my family and friends. After completing my Associates Degree, I plan on continuing at a 4-year college. I am very grateful for the scholarships that will help me achieve this goal."
